You’d think that a video game about the secret lives of DILFs would become a sensation for all the obvious reasons, but the secret to Dream Daddy‘s success has a lot to do with more than meets the eye.

The indie dating sim, created by Game Grumps, is filled with hot-dad eye-candy for sure, but it’s the game’s unexpected, endearing and nuanced take on grown-up relationships that truly sets it apart. This is what drove Wired to proclaim Dream Daddy as the “gaming miracle” of the year. You can download the game for $10.

In Dream Daddy, you get to play as a single dad who has recently moved into a new neighborhood with his teenage daughter. Soon, you meet a bevy of other single dads that you can take out on dates. At first, Dream Daddy seems to be just a vehicle for repackaging gay stereotypes (the jock, the fuckboy, the sensitive artist). Thankfully, it doesn’t take long for the game to reveal its three-dimensional characters with hidden hopes and emotional baggage.

“The result is something as sincere and funny as it is heart-rending, a self-aware, deeply humanistic game whose witty script makes even the most groan-worthy dad puns seem to sparkle,” Wired wrote. “It’s a subversion of dating sims that is not just the best dating sim I’ve ever played but also one of the best games of the year.”

Even though Dream Daddy is inherently a queer video game, the story doesn’t dwell on each character’s sexual identity and orientation. The creators, Leighton Gray and Vernon Shaw, didn’t want their dads to be fixated on labels. The dads in this game aren’t strictly gay or straight, they just are.

Here are 3 other reasons why the world fell in love with this fabulous dad-dating game.

Authentic + diverse universe. In Dream Daddy, there’s no one correct definition of DILF. You can be and date as black dads, Asian dads, dads who were previously married to women, hunky dads, beefy dads, non-binary dads or trans dads, complete with chest binders.

Realistic to dating IRL. While most dating sims are basically about the exchange of compliments for sex, Dream Daddy is more realistic to how dating actually works in real-life. For example, don’t think you can change the fuckboy dad into marrying you, because it’s never going to happen.

Focus on romance. The objective of Dream Daddy is to build a genuine, romantic relationship with another single dad. The operative word: single. There is one hot AF dad who is off-limits, however, because he is currently married to someone else. And the game doesn’t offer a home-wrecking mode.
