Photographer Alan Light has had dinner with President Bill Clinton and has been a guest at Oprah’s birthday party, but we think it’s his flawless collection of vintage Gay Pride photos that will go down in history.
During the 80s and the 90s, Alan got to document Pride celebrations in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago. It’s Gay Pride like you’ve never seen it before. White denim short shorts as far as the eye can see. And then there are the timeless Pride moments: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Sun-tanned muscles. Dykes on bikes. Mustaches galore. Young lovers on the grass. 👬
Beyond the cultural and sartorial insight, Alan’s vintage Pride photos are a bittersweet remembrance of all the friends and lovers lost in the height of the AIDS epidemic. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Alan actually captured one of the most heartbreaking and resilient eras in LGBT history. They are faded proof that we persevered.
Check out some of our favorite shots we discovered from Alan’s treasure trove of vintage Gay Pride photos. Some outfits may seem dated now, but being out and proud never goes out of style.
