Wear your halo like a hat, that’s like the latest fashion.
I got angels all around me, they keep me surrounded.
If this mixtape had an influential year, it’d definitely be the year 2008. Santigold, Ra Ra Riot and Junior Boys — artists who all broke through around that time — have new songs out this month. Santigold is more playful than ever on “Who Be Lovin’ Me” featuring the Drake-approved ILoveMakonnen. Another collaboration, this one sent down from indie boy heaven, Ra Ra Riot’s “Water” (lyrics featured above) gets a lending hand from Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij.
Said to have been inspired by listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, David Bowie is promising a new album early next year that will be equally open-minded. “Blackstar,” a 9:57-min song that was originally longer but had to be cut because iTunes doesn’t allow for 10-min singles, is the first taste.
“Soft Scene” by Autolux was produced by Boots, the mysterious collaborator who crafted Beyoncé‘s surprise album. Chance the Rapper‘s “Angels” (lyrics featured above) is uplifting even for non-believers. And Amsterdam DJ’s Yellow Claw recruited DJ Mustard, Ty Dolla $ign and Tyga to bring us “In My Room,” an adrenalized fusion of EDM and hip-hop that’s destined to become the earworm-iest party anthem of 2016.
