This month, FX released three super short teasers for the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Coven. This year’s scary plot will have Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Patti LuPone, Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe playing witches in New Orleans. Although a Salem-based historical persecution of witches, I think, is the more frightening American horror story.

None of the teaser trailers reveal much about the new episodes premiering October 9. The first video, titled “Detention,” is the most captivating, giving us the eerie vision of women nailed to (or crawling up) a wall. The image, turns out, is a borrowed visual motif from a 1977 German expressionist dance performance of Blaubart (Bluebeard) choreographed by Pina Bausch.

“There’s a very strong feminist theme there, there’s also themes of race and themes of oppression and a very strong theme of family, specifically mothers and daughters,” American Horror Story executive producer Tim Minear told Entertainment Weekly.

Bausch’s choreography often focuses on male-female interactions, so it will be interesting to see if any more allusions to her work will be made in the new season. In the meantime, another photo from her Blaubart performance that has just enough of that demented AHS vibe.

BOY TOYS TALK BACK: Have you spotted any other artistic or cultural references in the other two recently-revealed teaser trailers for American Horror Story: Coven?
